This project comprised of the Restoration of an historic former school building, a detached five–bay two-storey gothic revival former school constructed in 1871. These conservation works were carried out as part of the wider Blackwater Community School redevelopment in Lismore Co. Waterford.
The building is included on the Register of Protected Structures (RPS) held by Waterford County Council and is also included on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). Tom O’Brien Construction’s knowledge of these types of heritage projects and being members of the prestigious Register of Heritage Contractors of Ireland allowed our Master Craftsmen to carry out all Conservation & Restoration works in seeing this Historic Building brought back to life.
The heritage type works involved in this project included careful demolition works, lime plaster works, stone raking and repointing, natural slate roof repairs, leadwork replacement, decorative cornice repairs, upgrades to cast iron rainwater goods, repairs to historic iron railings and random rubble boundary walls along with restorative works to historic windows, joinery and floors throughout.
Substantial fire upgrade works were carried out along with full mechanical and electrical system replacements. Further classrooms were provided for along with storage rooms, reception areas, circulation spaces, entrance lobbies, multi-sensory rooms along with external SNU sensory gardens and further car parking facilities and external landscaping.
